Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is an amazing city in Thailand. I’ve lived in the fitness street so I’m going to be writing mostly about how it is to live here. First of all, there are plenty of fitness centers in this street (obviously), the ones I tried are Unit 27 (my favourite), the dragon muay thai, tiger muay thai and titan. First I’ll try to explain how it is to train at unit 27.

They have different types of trainings, group sessions, personal training (have to check availability) and open gym. I’ve only tried group sessions and I found them challenging enough. I consider myself an active person, I normally train waterpolo at least 8-10 hours a week and I try to fit in 4 hours of volleyball too. The first training at unit 27 left me exhausted, they still do and I’m 4 weeks in. The group sessions change throughout the week. They have morning glory/drill sargent every day (sunday is rest day). It’s one of my favourite group sessions, you have to complete a number of exercises set by the coach. I’ve never finished one before, sometimes it’s not even possible to finish, but that’s ok. Another sessions I’ve liked a lot is the punisher. They only do this on mondays. You go throw a number of bases doing each exercise 3 times. 20s exercise, 10s rest, 20s exercise, 15s rest, 20s exercice and 20s to move to the next. In addition, every 6 bases you move you have to complete a punishment set by the coach. There are a lot more group sessions at unit 27, if you want more info about them click here.

The Dragon Muay Thai is more focused on the marcial arts. I haven’t tried it much, but it was really interesting to learn how to punch and kick right. Something to keep in mind when going to the dragon Muay thai is the english level. Obviously I haven’t met all the trainers so I can’t say if the english level is the same for everyone, but I went with my brother and we found it a bit difficult to understand what they were trying to say to us. It’s enough to understand what they’re saying, but it’s difficult to have a conversation. I have to say I only tried the personal trainer, I haven’t tried the group sessions, so I’m not sure how it is. They instructors are very experienced and friendly, so even if communicating is difficult you can have a good time while you learn Muay thai at the dragon. Click here to see their website.

The Titan is like the expensive version of the unit27. They kind of different from the unit27 also. If you book for a day in the titan, you can go to all the classes you want, to the indoor gym and you get a shirt for free. The foto is where they do their classes. The gym looks like other gym, it’s a few meters away from there. They also have different activities from the ones the unit27 has, for example the buddha run, where you run uphill to a giant buddha. It’s also worth mentioning that the titan is a much less hardcore gym than the unit 27, that can be a good or bad thing depending on what you’re looking for. They also have hotel if you want the whole titan experience. If you want more info on the titan click here.

Last we have the tiger Muay thai which is like the expensive version of the dragon Muay thai.

There are other fitness centers in the street, but these are the most popular ones. If you’re wondering where to stay the night, there are many places!

We’ve been staying at serene village. You rent a room with a double bet, bathroom and tv (I don’t think anyone would use the TV having youtube). You are free to use the swimming pool and they come clean your room every day. If you need, they have laundry service for a very low price. They are really friendly, when I say this I mean that the first day one of the ladys huged me like 3 times xd. If you want to see more photos click here.

We haven’t been to other hotels in phuket so I can’t say anything about them, if you want to search for other hotels/apartments, here is a web that might help.

As for where to eat, there are to many good places. Because I found them all good I’m going to be giving general recommendations. If you want to order a burger, I strongly recommend you to go to the KAtaturk Chalong. We’ve tried other places burgers and they were bad, but the KAtaturk had an amazing cheeseburger. If you’re craving japanese food, the Sakura is a small place with amazing makis. If you’re just looking for fried rice with chicken, they have it everywhere. This is a save meal, unlike the curry. If you order curry and don’t have a height tolerance to spicy food, thing twice. They don’t know the meaning of not spicy. We’ve been to a lot of restaurants and even if you do order food without whatever it makes it spicy it will be very much spicy. You have to insist a lot if you don’t want to destroy your taste buds. Don’t worry there are a lot of none spicy things to try. Something we found mind-blowing is a place with sandwiches. It’s the only place I’ve seen with ham sandwiches. Okay, if you’re not spanish you probably won’t get it. In Spain we love sandwiches “bocatas” (I’m putting the spanish version, because when I think of sandwich it’s not exactly the same, the bread is kind of different), and almost all spanish people love ham “jamón serrano/ibérico” (again, ham is not the same as “jamon”, look it up, in spanish we would say “jamón dulce”. That’s literary sweet ham xd) and this is the only place I’ve seen outside of Spain that sells real spanish ham sandwiches “bocata de jamón”. They also have a lot of other sandwiches. I’m weird and I don’t like “jamón” that much so I ordered different kinds and like them all.

Something you’ll always want to have is water bottles. Tap water is not as safe to drink from as it is in other countries, so if you want to avoid problems I suggest you to avoid tap water.
